Sex selection is the method for choosing the gender of a baby. There are many ways and methods to choose the gender of a baby. These can be undertaken both before implantation and after implantation. The methods used before the implantation of the embryo are known as pre-implementation methods. There are two types: 1. The first method is sperm sorting in which the x-chromosome sperm is separated from the y-chromosome sperm. Afterwards the selected chromosome sperm is implanted to get the desired result. 2. The second method is known as pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. This method uses the in-vitro fertilization process to produce embryos and then the embryo is genetically tested for x and y chromosomes. The desired embryo is planted to produce a baby of the desired gender. Post-implantation methods are put to use after the embryo is implanted. These methods include the use of techniques such as ultrasound which helps in determining the sex of the unborn baby. The embryo is then removed through abortion. However, abortion is considered to be a highly unethical act and also a crime against humanity by various social, religious and political groups. All these methods come into play only after the parents want to go for sex selection of their un-born child. There are many factor governing the parents' decision to perform a sex selection exercise. The factors vary from one set of parents to another. Some people do it because they want to have a balanced family; that is, they desire a child of both the genders. For example, a couple with a boy may desire a girl and vice versa which prompt them to use the techniques of sex selection. Sometimes the decision is based on the medical history of the family. For example, if the boys in a family are prone to a certain disease then the parents prefer a girl. But most of the times the decision is purely based on the parents' bias against a certain gender. Some societies in the modern world still prefer boys over girls. Therefore, sex selection methods are put to use in these societies to ensure a boy. The reasons can differ. But one thing remains the same. People all over the world believe that sex selection is interfering with nature. It further promotes sexual discrimination in a society and the abuse of the smaller gender group. In some societies where boys are preferred over girls, sex selection will result in an increase in crimes against women. Many countries have prohibited sex selection. Countries like India, China and Canada have not only banned sex selection methods, they have also prohibited advertising supporting sex selection. It is treated as a crime in these countries. Sex selection is largely an individual's decision and should be made keeping in mind the individual's and the society's well being. |
