The baby 's gender guessing is a very old phenomenon. People have looked for ages to find out sure shot methods to guess a baby's gender. This is driven by the human being's fascination with unknown things. They have always sought ways to guess the outcome of a divine process like child birth. In modern times, the practice of guessing a baby's gender is done because expecting couples like to plan their families according to their wish. Also, in many societies a male child is considered better then a female child. Therefore, parents want to know the gender of the unborn baby before hand.

Although the process of ascertaining a babys gender is not unethical, it facilitates the process of sex selection (which is an unethical process). People try to guess their unborn child's gender and when they are sure about it the process of sex selection begins (which largely involves an abortion in such cases).

Although there are no sure shot methods to guess a baby's gender, the curiosity of man since times immemorial has resulted in the discovery of some methods to serve this purpose. Although these methods are not scientifically proven, they are known to have been accurate sometimes.

Some people use a Chinese calendar to guess the gender of the unborn child. It is based on the concept of days on which a lady conceives. So they can check out the day and guess the gender.

Some people guess the gender of an unborn baby based on the heart beats of a pregnant woman. They believe that if the expectant mother's heart beat is lower then 140 beats per minute, it means that the unborn baby is a boy. The unborn baby is a girl if the heartbeat is higher then 140 beats per minute.

Some people believe that the baby is a girl if the shape of the belly tells that mother is carrying it high. A shape showing the mother carrying her baby low tells that the baby is a boy.

They also believe that an active unborn child is a boy and an inactive one is a girl. Another belief is that if the pregnant lady craves for salt then it is a boy and if she craves for sweets then it is a boy.

The methods are all different but there is one common thread binding them all. They all satisfy the unethical desire of human beings to interfere with a natural process. These methods cannot be termed wrong but we can surely do without them.
